DC’s “Jim Lee & Friends” panel at San Diego Comic-Con was packed with announcements and reveals, and great conversation with some fantastic storytellers moderated by DC’s Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee.
In a “it can only happen at San Diego Comic-Con moment”, two comic industry titans, Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo, surprised fans at the panel with a major announcement. They are teaming up for Batman/Spawn #1, a 48-page one-shot due out December 13. This marks the first reunion of the two iconic characters since Batman/Spawn War Devil, which DC will be reprinting for release on November 15. Additional details and artwork will be revealed soon!
Teased earlier in the day on social media, Golden Globe Award Nominated Actor Paul Dano (The Batman) joined Lee to provide fans with a first look at his upcoming six-issue DC Black Label limited series, The Riddler: Year One. Dano’s story provides an in-depth look at how the unknown forensic accountant Edward Nashton evolved into the menace known as the Riddler and came so close to bringing down the entire city. Working with acclaimed artist Stevan Subic, Dano showed of an incredible assortment of covers and interior art for the debut issue hitting comic book stores on October 25. All of the fans in attendance received a con exclusive enamel pin of The Riddler: Year One logo.
Jim and Milestone Media co-founder Denys Cowan updated fans on the latest from Milestone, recapping their thoughts on the recently completed Milestone Initiative Talent Development Summit. Cowan also announced that on October 4, writer Vita Ayala and breakthrough artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey will tell new stories featuring Milestone’s flagship superhero, Static, in Static: Shadows of Dakota, the follow-up to Static: Season One. Fans were also treated to a first look at art from Milestone’s first-ever young adult original graphic novel, Static: Up All Night, debuting Summer 2023.
Lee and Cowan announced the exclusive HBO Max documentary Milestone Generations which chronicles the history of Milestone Media and it trailblazing legacy as the first Black-owned super hero comic book publisher and its partnership with DC. Fans in attendance were also treated to the first look of the trailer, which is available for viewing on YouTube. Milestone Generations debuts exclusively on HBO Max Friday, July 29.
DC’s Editor in Chief Marie Javins was presented with the prestigious Inkpot Award for 2022 from San Diego Comic-Con’s Director of Programming Eddie Ibrahim. The Inkpot Award has been presented each year at Comic-Con to individuals for their contributions to the worlds of comics, sci-fi/fantasy, film, TV, animation and fandom.
