Eight episodes just isn’t enough.
If you’ve been watching the debut season of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, you know we’re speaking true. James Gunn’s brilliantly deranged The Suicide Squad spinoff has managed to juggle an alien conspiracy plot, a kung fu revenge tale, an over-the-top family thriller and an occasionally heart-wrenching look at the complexities of family relationships and obligations—and it’s all worked perfectly. The much-anticipated season finale premieres tomorrow (or late tonight, if you want to get technical) and frankly, the thought of that being the end was making us cry—er, break into some face-muscle exercises.
So, we’re pretty ecstatic to hear that the series has been renewed for a second season, as shared today by both Gunn and Peacemaker himself, John Cena.
That’s right, #Peacemaker is coming back for Season Two. Thanks to Peter Safran, @JohnCena, our incredible cast & crew, our wildly supportive & lovely friends at @HBOMax - and mostly all of you for watching! @DCpeacemaker pic.twitter.com/wZSZBivrDQ

Learning about and eventually becoming #PEACEMAKER was an exercise in exploring the fun and absolutely genius mind of @JamesGunn. It’s been a privilege to work on this show and with the cast, crew and @hbomax team. Elated to say we’ll be back to create more peace for Season 2! pic.twitter.com/ujeeXODvOn

We’re sure all sorts of speculation about what season two will focus on will start as soon as everyone’s seen this week’s finale, but one thing we know right now is that Gunn will be back, writing and directing all episodes of season two.
“Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max,” he shared in today’s announcement. “To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”
Cena will be back, as well. “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character,” he said. “Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”
Gunn wrote all episodes of Peacemaker’s first season and directed five of them, so his promise to direct all the season two episodes represents even more direct involvement for the filmmaker when the series returns. Another thing that’s clear is that when it does, Peacemaker will not be in the same place he was mentally and emotionally at the start of season one. While his outlook on life remains juvenile and he’ll never be the smartest superhero in the room, Christopher Smith has undoubtedly grown since his misguided actions at the end of The Suicide Squad, and his current team has slowly become closer and more respectful of each other. It’ll be interesting to see their collective story progress, along with whatever new DC characters might show up for Peacemaker’s next go-round.
