The Flash is keeping things in the family when it comes to their newest superhero.

The CW series announced today that actor Jordan Fisher will be joining the cast this season as Bart Allen, the young speedster known to Flash comic book fans as Impulse. It will be a recurring guest-star role, meaning we can expect to see him multiple times, with his first appearance coinciding with the series’ 150^th episode later on this season.

The Flash will be making some changes to Bart’s relationship with Barry and Iris, however. While he still hails from the future, Fisher’s Impulse will be Barry and Iris’s son, rather than grandchild. The series character description describes Bart as “the fastest teenager on the planet. But due to Bart's penchant for wildly impulsive behavior, stunned parents Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach their new son patience. But it's a task they'll have to accomplish, in order for their family to work together and stop Team Flash's biggest threat yet!"

It’s unclear what that threat is, although it’s been announced that Godspeed will feature into this season. Bart’s arrival in Central City is somewhat reminiscent of season five’s Nora West-Allen, Barry and Iris’s daughter from the future who helped in that season’s struggle and ultimately gave her life to save her parents. It’s something that still haunts Barry and Iris to this day, so you imagine Bart’s emergence will stir up some strong emotions for his parents.

The character of Bart Allen was created back in 1994 where he was introduced as the child of Don Allen, one of the Tornado Twins, a pair of speedy Legion of Super-Heroes members who—in the comics—were the children of Barry and Iris. (Interestingly, Dawn Allen, the other Tornado Twin, is the mother of XS in the comics—it looks like The Flash is skipping a generation when it comes to its heroic offspring.) After traveling back in time and meeting the Flash, Bart became the second hero to adopt the name Kid Flash and after the apparent death of Wally West, was elevated to the Flash proper for a short while. In current continuity, he’s back to using the name Impulse and is a lively member of Young Justice.

Impulse will mark Fisher’s first role on a superhero show, though he did voice Sea Hawk on She-Ra and the Princess of Power. Fisher is arguably best known for his role in Netflix’s To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and for his singing roles in movies like Moana, Grease Live! and Rent: Live. One of his most recent roles, Jake Taylor in the Netflix dance musical Work It, was opposite his fellow speedster Keiynan Lonsdale, who is The Flash’s Wally West.
