We like to think that all of our great action figures and statues from DC Collectibles are created with the comic book fan in mind, but our new DC Comics Icons Action Figure line really takes that notion to a new level. Much like our popular line of DC Comics Icons statues, the lower-priced Icons action figures are based on very specific eras from DC Comics history that many of our fans will know and recognize.
Of course, our fans are also pretty great at recognizing classic comic book covers, which made us wonder… Are our Icons action figures true enough to the era to recreate some of the most iconic covers in comics? We thought we’d find out!
Our DC Comics Icons: Green Arrow Action Figure is based on the Green Arrow of the late 1980s, and arguably no comic better defined this take on the Emerald Archer than Mike Grell’s 1987 miniseries, GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS. This classic storyline, which alongside comics like THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE brought a deeper level of sophistication and maturity to comic books, found Oliver Queen taking a more stripped down and realistic approach to vigilantism, abandoning his trick arrows as he tracks down a serial killer who’s been killing prostitutes in the area. The book is a classic for a good reason, and boasts one of the most well know Green Arrow covers ever composed, which you can see recreated below using our action figure.
Here’s the original for comparison. How did we do?
This particular Green Arrow character design did hang around into the 1990s and made plenty of other appearances, like on GREEN ARROW #80, which was also written by Grell. That comic is not a part of the “Longbow Hunters” arc, but is still a very cool cover, so we recreated that one as well!
We’ll be the first to admit that we’re no Mike Grell, but we feel our Ollie captures the heart and soul of his work, giving you a new way to admire and appreciate it.
Our DC Comics Icons: Green Arrow Action Figure is in stores this month. Look for it, along with the other DC Comics Icons figures in our first wave—“Last Rights” Batman, “Brightest Day” Deadman and “Earth 2” Mister Miracle—at your favorite comic shop, specialty store or online retailer.
