When in England, Visit Ravenscar.
That’s right. Ravenscar actually exists. It’s a coastal village in North Yorkshire, England. Whether or not it’s the home to the dark asylum in which we met John Constantine in this episode is something you can discover for yourself next time you’re in England. That particular institution has been a part of John’s story since nearly the beginning. Want to discover more about the “graphic” origins of Constantine and his connection to Ravenscar? Like Bringing Coal (and Other Dark Matter) to Newcastle.
Just as the pilot showed, in the comic books the events at Newcastle have created permanent scars on whatever’s left of John’s soul. Ritchie Simpson was there, as were poor, unfortunate Astra, and Nergal—a Babylonian demon the little girl summoned to help her with a nasty problem. What happened was enough to drive Constantine into a mental institution.
And what about Ritchie? We’ll have to see if the TV version of the character meets the same deadly fate as the book’s. Hey, don’t say we didn’t warn you about spoilers.
Is There a Doctor in the House?
Speaking of fate, yeah, we were excited to see Doctor Fate’s helmet make a brief appearance (accompanied by an appropriate warning!). We’ll have to wait to see what part this powerful Egyptian occult object plays in John’s future. But for now, hands off!
