DC CELEBRATES DAWN OF DC AT WONDERCON

Top Writers and Artists—Including Tom King, Mitch Gerads, Tini Howard, Jeremy Adams, Dennis Culver, and Morgan Hampton—Gave Fans a Special Preview of What’s to Come in Dawn of DC

Exclusive first looks were the theme of today’s Dawn of DC panel at WonderCon 2023 in Anaheim, California. Fans in attendance got to hear directly from their favorite writers and artists, who shared details on upcoming storylines and revealed art that hasn’t been seen anywhere else.

Tom King, who is pulling triple duty writing three Dawn of DC titles—The Penguin, Wonder Woman, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold—kicked off the panel with a look at never-before-seen pages by artist Daniel Sampere from the upcoming Wonder Woman #1, launching in September. These pages show that even half a dozen Amazon Extradition Entity (AXE) task force members are not enough to take on Diana Prince in her quest to find the truth behind alleged Amazonian-led murders.

King and fellow Eisner Award-winning artist Mitch Gerads provided fans with a first look at the duo’s story in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, coming to comic shops on May 16. Batman: The Brave and the Bold features a horrifying four-part retelling of the first bloody clash between the Joker and the Batman. A tale of loathing, lies, and laughter, this may be the most frightening Joker story in a generation.

Hardcore comic book fans know that Beast Boy originated in the pages of Doom Patrol #99, so it’s only fitting that Unstoppable Doom Patrol writer Dennis Culver and series artist Chris Burnham are introducing a brand-new character named Beast Girl in the series! Culver unveiled a character design page for Beast Girl, giving fans a closer look at what will surely become a favorite character going forward. Ahead of Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 hitting comic book shops on March 28, WonderCon attendees got a special preview of in-progress artwork for issue #2, scheduled for May.

Culver announced that the miniseries, originally planned as six issues, has now been bumped up to seven thanks in large part to the fan response to Unstoppable Doom Patrol! Fans won’t have to wait long for this extra bonus issue, as it’ll come in Unstoppable Doom Patrol #4 and will be available at comic shops on June 27. Unstoppable Doom Patrol #4 will be drawn by David Lafuente (Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man).

Harley Quinn is officially joining Dawn of DC in Harley Quinn #28, out March 28 from writer Tini Howard and artist Sweeney Boo. Howard was on hand to share a first look at the beautiful pages Boo has drawn, which see Harley sentenced to community service in the form of having to teach at the local community college. Howard, who is also writing Catwoman, teased that fans will want to stay tuned to see what she and Batman writer Chip Zdarsky have been plotting together.

Jeremy Adams (The Flash) has reunited with Flashpoint Beyond artist Xermánico for the ongoing Green Lantern series launching this June. Adams showed fans what Hal Jordan is up against as the Guardians of Oa have quarantined Earth! A heartbreaking defeat has sent Hal reeling, returning home to rediscover his roots and find the man responsible for ruining his life: Sinestro. Green Lantern #1 flies into comic shops on May 9.

Morgan Hampton from the Milestone Initiative Talent Development Program is bringing the human side of Victor Stone back to Cyborg. Hampton gave everyone in attendance a first look at character designs and upcoming interior pages from artist Tom Raney (Green Lantern) and revealed that he’s receiving mentoring from industry icon and Cyborg co-creator Marv Wolfman.

Fans attending MegaCon next weekend in Orlando, Florida, are encouraged to attend DC’s panel on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET in room S320AB, which has an all-star lineup: Geoff Johns (Justice Society of America), Joshua Williamson (Superman), Simone Di Meo (DC vs. Vampires), Mitch Gerads (Batman: The Brave and the Bold), and Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Action Comics). It’s not to be missed!
