It looks like Red X teaming up with the Titans really IS a sign of the end times.
While many of the possible futures we’ve seen over the course of DC Future State have been, in a word, bleak, none may be worse than what Nightwing, Starfire, Raven and the rest are facing in the pages of Future State: Teen Titans. Told non-chronologically, the Tim Sheridan-written and Rafa Sandoval-drawn comic has revealed that Titans Tower lies in ruins, while half the world’s population and a frightening number of Titans hopefuls have died as the result of some yet-to-be-revealed crisis. What we do know is that a destructive force known as the Four Riders of the Apocalypse has been somehow unleashed by none other than…well, Red X. How is unclear, as is why the Titans are working with the mysterious vigilante rather than throwing him to the wolves.
And let’s talk about Nightwing. Uh, what’s with the mask, dude? Issue #1 ended with Dick, wearing a costume very reminiscent of the original Nightwing suit, slipping on the mask worn by longtime Titans enemy, Deathstroke. We can’t imagine Batman—or the rest of the Bat-Family for that matter—would approve.
Clearly, a lot has happened in this mysteriously mutated future—including Beast Boy and Cyborg somehow getting fused together into a hero called Cybeast—and we don’t have much in the way of answers. So, it’s a good thing that Future State: Teen Titans #2 is just about here. With the Four Riders bearing down, the last remaining Titans will join together in a final stand where they’ll each be tested…and not all will survive. Who will make it? Will the world be saved? Is Deathstroke a good guy now? And who the heck is Red X, anyhow? We promise some of these questions will soon be answered, so why don’t you get an early start and check out our exclusive first look at the issue right now?
Future State: Teen Titans #2 by Tim Sheridan, Rafa Sandoval, Julio Ferreira and Alejandro Sanchez is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, February 9.
