If you’re a regular Batman reader, you’ve certainly met Punchline, the Joker’s new assistant and apparent love interest who managed to get the jump on both Batman and Harley Quinn during “The Joker War.” We’ve been learning new things about Punchline ever since she was introduced by James Tynion IV and Guillem March back in Batman #89. We learned her real name is Alexis Kaye and she was a college student who found herself drawn to the Joker’s nihilistic ideology. We discovered she has a way with toxins—and even managed to dose the Dark Knight himself. We found out she’s a pretty strong fighter, capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone in the Bat-Family. And at the end of The Joker War, we found that Alexis had been put under house arrest and has a trial coming up for her role in the city’s destruction.
But what we don’t know is how exactly she met the Joker. That tale hasn’t been told…until now.
Spinning out of The Joker War’s shocking conclusion, Punchline #1 is an all-new one shot from Tynion, Sam Johns and Mirka Andolfo that promises to get up close and personal with Gotham’s newest menace, providing glimpses of her terrifying past while also setting up her next chapter. Speaking of that past, did you know that her first interaction with the Joker was as one of his victims? Nothing says romance like being held hostage, right? Look, we’re not going to judge Punchline (and we certainly don’t want to make her angry), but it’s clear after reading this first look at the comic that her history with the Clown Prince of Crime is far more complicated than we realized. Could she truly have been a victim of the Joker all this time? Check out our exclusive preview and decide for yourself!
Punchline #1 by James Tynion IV, Sam Johns, Mirka Andolfo and Romulo Fajardo, Jr. is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, November 10.
