We finally have a face to go with all the brooding! After appearing largely as a peripheral, faceless figure throughout Titans’ debut season, Deadline just announced that actor Iain Glen has been cast as Bruce Wayne on the DC Universe series. While you may not recognize the name, Game of Thrones fans likely know Glen for his role as Jorah Mormont on the soon-to-return HBO series.
While it’s impossible to hear “Bruce Wayne” without also thinking Batman—and the Dark Knight did appear, sort of, in Titans’ first season finale—the official character description provided suggests that this is a Bruce Wayne who’s retired from Caped Crusading:
After decades of fighting crime as Batman, billionaire Bruce Wayne is just as driven to protect Gotham from evil as he was in his prime. Needing to reconcile his relationship with Dick Grayson, the duo hope to forge a new dynamic as Bruce tries to help his former sidekick and the Titans achieve success.
That’s an interesting sounding dynamic—something that almost calls to mind the Bruce/Terry relationship on Batman Beyond—but we’ll have to wait until Titans returns this fall for its second season to learn more. Already it’s shaping up to be even more epic than the first, with the news that Slade Wilson and his children Joseph and Rose are joining the cast. How exactly Bruce will slot into a story that seems to be taking inspiration from the Teen Titans’ longtime history with Deathstroke, and that still needs to conclude the Trigon storyline that began last season, remains to be seen. But regardless, we are ALL FOR IT!
What about you, Titans fans? Are you ready to see the Bruce Wayne/Dick Grayson dynamic explored in Titans’ second season? Do you think we’ll finally see Dick adopt the mantle of Nightwing? And how will the rest of the Titans react to Bruce’s attempts to reconcile with Robin? Feel free to share your theories on Twitter and in the DC Universe community.
