Hey there, Supergirl fans! It's Meg again, back this week to take a look at some of the introductions (and reintroductions) that happened tonight because, man oh man, that was kind of a lot to take in, right? I mean, Mon-El's return, time travel, marriage, Imra, and Reign? All in one go?
Phew.
Luckily, nearly everything on that list has some pretty meaty comic book history I can share with you that just might help shed some light on what may or may not coming up for the Girl of Steel in the future. This entire episode was basically one massive #DCTV Secret—so with that in mind, I'm gonna break it down piece by piece. Also, this is always the case with the Couch Club, but this particular installment is REALLY heavy on the spoilers. So, don’t read if you haven’t yet watched!
Mon-El's Back!
Okay, this might not be a huge surprise—after all, there's a pretty big difference between seeing someone die and just assuming someone is dead. So, having him still be alive? Not that much of a shocker. What is surprising, however, is just how he survived and why he's back now.
Turns out, Mon-El got pulled through a wormhole into the 31st Century, to a future where he was cured of his natural Daximite sensitivity to lead so the Earth's atmosphere is no longer toxic to him! That's the good news. The bad news is that in the seven months since his disappearance in our time, seven years have passed for him. Yikes. But you saw the episode, so hopefully you remember all this.
The important thing to note here is that the 31st Century? That's not just some time picked at random. It's the chronological home of the massive superhero team known as the Legion of the Super-Heroes, which just so happens to be the team Mon-El's comic book counterpart is most commonly associated with. Fancy that, huh?
Supergirl has been building towards a Legion introduction for a while now and it's getting closer and closer by the day. In fact, we've actually just met the first new member of the team…
Meet Imra Ardeen!
Let’s start with the big one, shall we? We did learn one very important thing about Imra this week, and it's a bit of a heartbreaker for Kara (and Kara/Mon-El shippers...sorry, guys). Imra is Mon-El's wife, a major life change made in the seven years he spent away in the 31st Century.
So...ouch. That's rough. I'll be the first to admit that I don't like Mon-El very much, but I also don't like seeing Kara hurt or upset, so this isn't an ideal situation for me either, strangely enough.
But either way: Imra's a lot more than just Mon-El's surprise future wife. She's actually Saturn Girl, one of the core members of the Legion over in the comics. She gets her name from the fact that she comes from Titan, one of Saturn's moons, and her powers are mostly related to telepathy. She's a mind reader and occasional mind controller, but whether or not she'll end up with that particular skillset in this incarnation is still anyone's guess.
Also, whether or not Imra is actually going to suit up as Saturn Girl anytime soon is up for debate, but I'm hopeful that she does because Kara's likely going to need all the help she can get, considering what else we learned this week.
Here's Reign!
Alright, so we've all known that Reign was coming in Sam's future, right? Between the promotional stuff and the foreshadowing, she was basically a ticking clock. But what we didn't know—or, at least, what I didn't know, maybe some of you had guessed already—was just how this whole metamorphosis was going to take place.
And man, as if this week weren't gut wrenching enough already, watching Sam tell Ruby that amazing, positive things were going to happen only to have herself be all but brainwashed out of her body? Ouch, ouch, ouch.
Over in the comics, Reign is a fairly recent addition to the DC Universe. She's a Worldkiller, a biological, experimental weapon made on Krypton, so that much we know is still true for Sam. But beyond that, really anything could happen. (We do, however, know what she looks like in her Reign costume.) In the comics, Reign is actually one of five different Worldkillers. So, that's definitely something to keep in mind as we learn more about her on the show.
Though, really, I'm more anxious to see what all of this is going to mean for poor Ruby, who, by all accounts, is now half-Worldkiller herself.
I think it's safe to say it's going to be a busy, busy season from here on out for just about everyone in National City.
